Cushion Moon

Cushion Moon

The white side of the moon cushion, with various craters and other stitches in light blue, grey and fawn thread.

A while ago, I had an idea to make a moon cushion: one side would be light (the near side), and the other either deep grey or black (the dark side). I’d bought a special foot for free machine embroidery over a year ago and had never used it, so this project seemed like a good place to try it out.

(For those who don’t use sewing machines, a presser foot holds the fabric flat while teeth underneath the fabric guide it away from you. There are a variety of different types of ‘feet’ for different purposes. In free machine/motion sewing, the teeth are disabled so that you are responsible for moving the fabric, and in any direction, and the special foot gives extra visibility. I’m pretty sure mine wasn’t actually fixed properly.)

The dark side of the moon is on black fabric, with crater details and markings in light-coloured thread.

I used various thread colours, not that you can tell on the pictures of the Dark Side. I’m not sure how the stitches will cope with repeated leaning use, but it doesn’t really matter.

The finished moon is quite large (about 60cm/2 feet in diameter) and very comfy.

I said this last month, but a proper newsletter will be heading out very shortly. If you’ve not yet signed up and would like to, you can do so here.
